I own and drive a JB Plate in MY
Before I talk about changing my car tires, I have an article covering why I take public transport to cross back into SG. This also means that I own and drive a JB plate car in MY.
One of the reasons why I do so is because the cost of ownership of an SG car is enormous. Also, SG plates tend to stand out in MY and I prefer to avoid that kind of attention. On top of that, I get to top up RON 95 petrol as I wish which at the time of writing costs RM2.05 per liter. No price for guessing what is the price of the equivalent in SG…

In addition, these days I spend 99% of my time in JB. So there is no need to own an SG car. And finally, the costs associated with car consumables in MY is much cheaper. Allowing me to take advantage of the currency arbitrage. Where I earn SGD and spend in MYR.
Changing out my car tires
Speaking of which, I am changing out my car tires after 3 years of ownership. These were 19 inch Continental UC6 (SUV). Although they have been serving me fine, recently they seem to be just that bit more slippery on the road. Plus these wheels are huge and will consume more fuel since they themselves are much heavier.
And to add to that, a recent tire puncture pushed me to make the decision for the tire change.
I treat it as an opportunity for me to downsize the tires to 17 inch instead. And also look for tires with good grip on the road especially in the wet!
A search through YouTube landed me with made in Japan Yokohama AE61 (SUV). These are not just comparable but are superior to Michelin PS4 according to the EU tire labeling standards.
Since I drive an SUV, these tires are surprisingly economically priced considering how they perform against the competition. Label me happy after the tire change and putting the tire puncture incident behind me.
Bottomline
Finding a tire dealer with these tires are fairly easy with a search on Google map perusing the reviews. Although the dealer offer for the tires are the cheapest I see online, I suspect some of the margins are earned back from me buying a new set of rims.
Still, I push repeatedly for discounts looking at the boss in the eye. And he did give in and also included a brandless set of tire lock-nuts free. The set of 4 tires are also very fresh in that the year of manufacture is 2023 week 27 = JULY. I put on these new tires in October 2023.
