Smart Door Locks, which one?!
In this article, I am going to talk about smart door lock installation in my Johor Bahru home. I have been thinking about installing a smart door lock after watching numerous Youtube videos covering it as well as recently finishing my home renovations.
I do not want my contractor to find a solution because he will not understand my needs and preferences. Moreover, since he is a general contractor and not one that is a door specialist, I am afraid that will end up either spoiling the smart door lock or installing it incorrectly voiding the warranty of the smart door lock.
As for my needs and preferences, I want a smart door lock that is the most straightforward in unlocking the door. I don’t want to have a key card or pin number or use the phone. I want the door to recognize my fingerprint and it just works at a reasonable price. Also, it must play nice using zigbee or homekit.
And I narrowed it down to the Aqara A100. It provides all the features that I need and at a fraction of the price in comparison to the other brands.

Now buying my own smart door lock is easy. The big package arriving at my doorstep within days of ordering it from Shopee. The only thing is how do I install it?!
I am not good at these kind of things so I need to get someone who installs doors for a living and although there are many around, not a lot of them seem to work with smart door locks. Especially so when Aqara is not exactly a household brand.
So I asked around and a contact was given to me. Someone who installs Aqara door locks and does it daily and is in JB!
After arriving, and starting on the installation, he tells me that Aqara door locks have a different nail size and are usually too long for our Malaysian homes. As such, he needs to cut the nails down so that it can fit the door and secure the lock at the same time.
Thankfully, the installation is done within 2 hours and is now functionally fine for me. I am enjoying days where I can leave my house without needing to bring my keys and just go.
