Why go on a Malaysia Road Trip?
A Malaysia road trip, is definitely hard to replicate in neighboring Singapore because it is too small or Thailand where road infrastructure is sub optimal in many places.
Hence, the beautiful thing about living in Malaysia is the endless exploration that’s possible. This allows me to plan Malaysia road trips in all kinds of permutations. This first one begins from my JB home up to Frazer Hill and back.
Although the trip was a short one taking up to 4 day 3 nights, it was an enjoyable and fruitful one. Having many thrift store finds, new food places explored and grounds walked. I will include most importantly, the places along the road trip below.
That way you can use it for your own trip planning convenience. However, before that here’s some tips for make the trip a little bit more safe and successful.
Planning Your Malaysia Road Trip: Essential Tips
Before hitting the open road, some prep work will ensure your Malaysia road trip is smooth sailing. Here are the essentials to get you started.
Your ride. Because I live in JB and own a proton X70, I find it perfect for Malaysia road trips because it handily swallows up all the things I bring for the trip as well as new purchases. As well as carry the heavier me after gobbling down all the delicacies along the way. Plus its comfortable too. Whatever your vehicle of choice, just make sure it is serviced and the tires are ready for the trip!
Valid Documents. Ensure your driver’s license, passport if foreigner, and car insurance are up-to-date. Those with a Singaporean license, there is no need to obtain an international driving license. Along the way if you get a parking ticket as I have, here’s how to pay it. I detail how I have to hunt high and low in order to get pay the fines so that you don’t have to. This occurred right after parking on the roads whilst going off to lunch in Cheras, KL.
Data. If you are from Singapore, go get a SIMBA plan that allows you to have roaming in Malaysia without additional fees. Their new plans as of 2024 seems to have larger roaming allowance now of between 3-7GB! That’s more than enough for the trip covering navigation and spotify streaming plus some. I am currently on and enjoying their super roam MY plan. Incredulously, I can call into Singapore numbers without extra charges when in Malaysia. I detail more on Singapore Telco roaming in Malaysia.
More tips!
Navigation. Malaysia’s highways are well-connected, but plan your route in advance. To avoid traffic and traffic police, I use Waze. This is because kind community members will warn of police presence ahead so that you can prepare for it and avoid unnecessary fines they like to dish out.
Accommodations. I prefer booking Airbnbs. This is because of the ease of booking and communications with the host. More importantly, they are typically cheaper than hotels and come with more amenities like washing machines. I consider it essential since I plan physical activities like hiking in addition to packing light. Most also offer free parking with great WiFi connection as well as amenities like pool, sauna and/or gym.
Budgeting. If you drive a Malaysia plate vehicle and pumping RON95, fuel costs RM2.05/L (as of 2024). Plan for tolls and parking fees. Most locals parking on road will skip the parking fees hurhur.
Flexibility. Expect the unexpected detours or changes in plans. Stay flexible, and you’ll find that’s where the best memories are made!

Yoon Lai (646, Jalan Gangsa 6, Taman Timur, 81000 Kulai, Johor, Malaysia). If you are starting from JB, this gives you a great warm start to the journey. I especially love the unique wanton noodles.
The Coffeeholic (Section B, 250, Jalan S2 B12, Seremban 2, 70300 Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia). Coffee stops are a necessity and I love love love their coffee and why? Because most importantly, their coffees are not sour. You will also see their roasting machine in the shop. In addition, they sell beans too! Last but not least, air-con. haha.
Millerz square (15, Old Klang Rd, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). This is where I stay in KL. Busy and close to where the all the amenities are including the dim sum place below. Because it is also relatively new, the apartments are very comfortable and pleasant. And the security guards are very aware and seasoned telling where to go when you arrive.
Restoran Sing Pao Dim Sum (A-16, Old Klang Rd, 58200 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). They open till late, crucial if you are out all day and still want something warm before hitting the sack. And within walking distance from Millerz square. What’s more, they have reasonable pricing too!
Ur-Mu (3, Jalan Bedara, Bukit Bintang, 50200 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). A surprising modern arts museum in the heart of the city and totally enjoyable. Go all the way up for the views and the vibes. The artworks are also quite thought-provoking, surprisingly. Take some time to soak in the culture!
The stops of my Malaysia road trip (KL-Frazer hill)
乐福.福建面 (Jalan 1/32a, Tsi Business & Industrial Park, 52000 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia). If you are brave enough to venture into the middle of an industrial hub. Across the road is a lighting shop that sells at literally factory prices. Close by there is also a 2nd hand shop if you are in the mood the snag some deals. I will show you what I find in the near future.
Lookout Point Sungai Selangor Dam (55, 44000 Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor, Malaysia). On the way to Frazer Hill. This is a must stop for the ambience and also the views. A place where you can catch a break, enjoy the breeze at the lookout. Make sure to mark it on Waze as you can miss it easily.
GlassHouse Fraser’s (Lot 1494, Jalan Lady Guillemard, Bukit Fraser, 49000 Bukit Fraser, Pahang, Malaysia). Because it is so cooling, you sit outside and enjoy the fresh air, birds and coffee. But because this is one of the few cafès around, it can get busy. Enjoy the collection of small pot cactus, with its vibrant spiny colors.
