Live in JB, earn SGD. Why I chose JB
I made the move to live in JB (Malaysia) at the start of 2020, and it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Why I chose JB boils down to its unique financial benefits.
Currently, I am earning SGD and taking advantage or the currency arbitrage S$1 = MYR3.52 (get the latest update). In addition, I am investing in USD denominated modalities and also bitcoins both of which are stronger than MYR and even SGD.
This strategy allows me to earn in stronger currencies (SGD), invest in appreciating assets (BTC) and spend in a weaker currency (MYR). This approach, not only stretches my income but I can also live better too.

Live in JB costs: affordable luxury for SGD earners
As an SGD earner living in JB, I enjoy affordable luxury thanks to Malaysia’s lower costs. Things are cheaper in Malaysia. From groceries, to F&B, petrol and transportation as well as accommodations.
However, this does not apply to the average the average MYR earner due to lower wages in Malaysia. Why I chose JB becomes clear when leveraging currency arbitrage.
Excluding the top 1% in Malaysia and Singapore, who earn far more, the cost differences significantly impact us common folk.
For us common folk, the differences do add up over time.
This means that if one can take advantage of the currency arbitrage, then one can also save more, and use the law of compounding to sustain efforts in increasing our quality of life AND expectancy.
Financial freedom allows me to pursue passions, like writing this article, without worrying about deadlines or office demands. And helping you, the reader in the process.
Take full advantage of cost difference with live in JB
While some Singaporeans make shopping trips to JB to exploit cost differences, there are limitations. For instance, drivers with SG-plated vehicles must enter Malaysia with a minimum 3/4 full fuel tank, restricting petrol arbitrage benefits.
Also, there is a limit to how much you can buy from JB to lug back to SG within 48 hours. At the time of writing, this is S$100 before you have to declare to the customs and pay your dues. If more than 48 hours, then it’s S$500.
And on top of that, there are certain items that one cannot bring into SG from JB. This include all kinds of meats. So even though you love the bak kwa that is significantly cheaper in JB, that alas is also prohibited.
However, by living in JB, these constraints disappear.
You can fully leverage petrol arbitrage, freely purchase and enjoy cheaper goods and services, and avoid customs declaration worries. This freedom allows you to truly maximize the cost advantages of residing in JB.
Malaysian policies: A kinder alternative (I can’t talk about on YouTube)
Beyond financial benefits, Malaysia’s policies have been more accommodating.
A notable contrast is the COVID-19 vaccine mandates implemented in Singapore on December 2021, for employees who have to return to physical work spaces from January 15, all through April 26 of 2022.
Medically eligible but unvaccinated employees were required to comply, despite potential negative test results.
In the past I have talked about how the COVID vaccines do not make sense.
As such, on the basis that I am young and healthy with no immunological deficiencies as well as scientific training and experience to be able to analyze the data so as to make the best decision for myself. If I were to live in Singapore, I would have lost my job during the period.
Fortunately, being in JB, Malaysia meant I wasn’t subject to these mandates. Malaysia’s more relaxed approach was a welcome respite. While Malaysia isn’t perfect, comparing the two, I prefer the former.

A simple drive from my doorstep unlocks, a world of cultural experiences, from vibrant cities to rustic towns, scenic road trips through Malaysia’s stunning landscapes as well as easy access to East Malaysia.
I still remember a recent malaysia roadtrip from JB to KL and then Frazer Hill, where one moment I was drinking delicious coffee in a calm cafè and the next moment I am popping in delicious dim sum in a busy KL street. Where each piece is seasoned with car honks and different Chinese dialects.
Finding Home: Why Living in JB Feels Like Paradise
For me, “home is where the heart is” takes on a new meaning in JB.
In Singapore, owning a private home was a distant dream, but in JB, it’s a reality.
Let’s look at the sums. The cost of my 2-storey intermediate 1440 sf terrace is about RM500k at the time of my purchase. On the low end in Singapore an equivalent property costs SGD1.7 million on the very low end.
My humble abode in a serene, low-density residential sanctuary is a haven where I can truly live my best life.
With ample space to explore DIY projects and hobbies, rest and recharge, create and express myself as well as host friends and share experiences.
Having a home in JB allows me to spread my wings and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Friends can stay over, and we can explore Malaysia’s charms together.
